Abuse of women and children has been swept under the rug by most people. For those of us who have been abused, we believe we deserved it. Widow Kate and her 4 yr old daughter, Miranda, have been victims of a tormented husband and father until his death. I appreciated how I was able to feel sympathy for him through Kate's eyes, because she understood he couldn't help his behavior, and why he did the things he did. When Zachariah, the neighbor growing grapes to produce "sinners' swill", rides into their lives looking for his dog (who is digging up the rose garden), he is not welcome. He saves Miranda's life, but nearly dies, and while being nursed by Kate, they form a friendship. He becomes the answer to Miranda's magic wish. I loved the relationship between Zach and Miranda. Breaking through the wall Kate has built to survive her marriage is a challenge. I enjoyed the little bits and pieces of progress. The dead husband is a story in himself, along with his brother. Unfortunately, I kept seeing similarities between these two brothers and a faction of the American public. I call them "The Religious Right". That certainly doesn't make the rest of us "The Wrong" by any means, but the Judge's comments to the jury and gallery at Kate's trial about all of them sharing guilt in what happened out at the Blakely place was spot on, in my opinion and is partly responsible for my enjoyment of the book.Catherine Anderson has written a fairy tale for grown ups. There's not a lot of hot steamy sex, but there is plenty of sexual
tension and attraction. I especially enjoy the fact that Ms Anderson's female characters are flawed, just like the rest of us. Her women are sometimes overweight, blind, paralyzed, mute, scarred, abused or some other "imperfection". I like that Zachariah is just as insecure about his appearance as most of us. Although her male heros are always too good to be true, her wonderful stories and characters are likeable, enjoyable, and they always lift my spirits.
I just love a good happy ending, and this book lives up to Catherine Anderson's talent for telling a good story.

One of her best Hard to put down. I loved the storyline and Mandy was such a character. Another great love story.
Once again Ms Anderson has given us a heart warming book of hardship and love. She always makes you turn each page eagerly waiting to find out what's next .Love all her books.
I have never read a Catherine Anderson book that I didn't love. She is a superb author. This one is especially good.
Reading all her books as I can't leave them alone once I start.
Another winner from Catherine Anderson. This book held my interest from beginning to end; I couldn't put it down. I was rooting for Zachariah from the start and was enchanted by Miranda (Kate's daughter). I laughed out loud several times several times at the words that came out of her mouth. I've read this several times and will be rereading it again. A definite winner...
I LOVED THESE BOOKS....
I seriously cannot rave enough about Catherine Anderson books
first one was as good as the second, third, fourth as many as she has written ....LOL )
The series meaning the Harrigans as well as the Kendrick/Coulter series was just as interesting as this one.
still an excellent read I would reccommend any and all Catherine Anderson Books
Let me start by saying this is an emotionally moving and truly memorable book! It's what I consider a heavy historical with serious subject matter that will tug at your heart and touch your soul. It was originally published in 1993 and at about 400 pages and just over 6000 locations on the kindle version, it is not a short story. It is however an unforgettable romance and a re-read for me, which I rarely do with so many books still left to be read. Ms. Anderson is without a doubt a rare talent and an amazing author to say the least. Although it is a historical set in 1890 Oregon, I'd still highly recommend this to all lovers of romance regardless of genre - its simply that beautiful and lovely a story!
Kate and her daughter Miranda were emotionally and physically abused by her deceased husband. Though she's having a hard time making ends meet, she refuses to ever marry again for obvious reasons. Upon meeting her Zach is instantly taken in by her beauty, but after getting to know her better he falls in love with her sweet and innocent nature. Then circumstances force a reluctant Kate and he to marry. But when the death of her first husband comes to light, Kate and Zach will have to stand strong and true to bring their newly found happiness to fruition.
All the characters in this book had so much depth and felt so real to me. Zach was just a normal guy who doubted himself, was insecure about his looks, and admitted when he was afraid. I thoroughly loved him and even though he may not have been the ideal and perfect knight in shining armor, he was a real hero nonetheless. Then there was Kate who was sweet and kind, not to mention a tender and teriffic mother to her little girl. Even with all the hell she'd gone through for five years, she still had so much faith it was inspiring and heartwarming to witness.
Without a doubt, Zach brought both Kate and Miranda back to life. He showed them the meaning of happiness, kindness, laughter and most especially, peace! He was an absolutely wonderful father to Miranda and loved both she and Kate more than life itself. Not only was this a beautiful love story, but its also a story about what lengths a parent will go to to protect their child. I laughed, smiled, and can honestly say I even cried while reading this book. And with as many books as I read, it's no easy feat to make me actually shed tears. Still, it was more the beauty and my love for the characters when I did, than out of any sadness. Overall just an incredible love story and a true favorite of mine =)
