Slight Spoilers:If you have read the other books don't stop, read this book and finish the series. It is a great world to get into and I don't feel that the ending will disappoint too many. That said there just isn't enough in the book. It seems like Brent glosses over a lot of things throughout the series. In the first book I noticed Logan was hardly mentioned but then gets to be a main character throughout the next two books. Would have been great to connect with him like we did with Kylar but he was glossed over. Same with Dorian. The man was hardly mentioned throughout two books and then is thrust to the front in the third. Im not saying we should get a quarter of the book to him. Im saying there should have been more books. It seems that by sticking to three books Brent really limited himself and didn't put enough into characters and scenes that would have really made the people and the world around them that much more spectacular. The worst of Brent glossing over you will start to notice with the last thirty percent of the book. It gets to a point where you just feel everything is being rushed. Logan as King, the Chantry, God King Dorian, even Uly meeting her father and mother. GLOSSED OVER. That one hurt the worst. All in all a good series but I think it could have been a great series if he had just written more. Hell with such a complex world I feel he could have up to six books. I think Brent has learned from this series though because his new series "The Black Prism" which he originally planned to be three is getting extended. I will continue to read and buy because it seems that Brent is continuing to grow and improve.

Beyond the Shadows The Night Angel Trilogy 3 Brent Weeks 9780316033664 Books Reviews
I really liked the first two books of the series, but this one was a huge disappointment. Plots and characters that were developed in the previous two books (and the early parts of this book as well!) were suddenly dropped completely and never mentioned again. Others were resolved suddenly with no aftermath. And some things that occurred (particularly around Logan Gyre) clearly had a lot of backstory and depth to it that were never explained and didn't make sense without that context. It felt like the series was meant to be four books long instead of three, and many parts of the plot were simply removed so that the series could come to an end. This series had such huge potential, and in this book it was wasted.
I feel that the author would have been better off writing a quarter instead of a trilogy. Even though the plot was excellent in the previous 2 books, in this one, it seems to rush at double speed. Also, this book seems to veer off in a different direction from the previous 2 books, as it takes on more mythical and magical context, which in my opinion seems to come out from nowhere. The pace also left many open questions. If it was spread out over 2 books, I feel that the ending would have been much more smooth.
I started with The Black Prism and The Blinding Knife (which were so awesome and had such a strong voice and unique world) from his other series, then went back and read this series.
I feel like he really owes Robert Jordan's estate a check. First the Chantry - Sister's, Talent, weaves, even the way they deal with the world around them they're a total rip of the Aes Sedai and the relationships between the men and women have flavors of the White Tower/Black Tower. I know that WOT influenced a lot of author's, but this is really bad. There are a lot of times where I feel like they're talking about the Age of Legends, lost arts, etc. Again, I know those are common themes, but this one feels especially plagiarized. I read a lot of Sanderson (who I discovered through WOT) and he manages to keep it really fresh - for heaven's sake he finished writing WOT and you really had to squint to find the WOTisms in Words of Radiance - the least Weeks could do is be less obvious.
The other big issue I had with this was the pacing - it really needed to be 2 books. So much happens "off screen" and so many emotional resolutions are rushed. A lot of stupid decisions are made, and the big reveal isn't a twist, it's illogical. And none of the relationships or dynamics are satisfying, they're all really uncomfortable and obvious. And Logan is supposed to be this amazing King, but his reasons for war are pretty thin.
At least it was less rapey than the others - thankfully he never describes rape in any of them, but he talks about it. A LOT. But I WILL give him TONS of credit for having it go all ways. That's not sarcasm - I honestly, truly appreciate that he allows men to be victimized as much as women. There are tons of sexist overtones in these genres, and I truly applaud how he hits on traditional and non-traditional gender roles so organically without a lot of heavy handedness.
So all that being said it's still an engaging story, and if he reopened this world I would come along. Even if some of the charcater motivations don't really make sense in the end (and you can tell they're just plot devices), you still manage to get invested in them and I would check back in with them.
