I'm reading this book in Spanish (not my native language), so it's taking much longer, but that's a good thing because I'm very much enjoying the story and wondering what's going to happen next. The plot unfolds in layers with a subtle complexity as Daniel tries to solve a mystery that parallels events in his own life. I love the writer's sense of humor and am often amused even though I'm sure I'm missing many of the jokes due to the language/cultural barrier. I know that reading this book is helping me with the language because now that I'm about 3/4 of the way done, I'm reading much more fluently than in the beginning. I'll be checking out other books by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.Tags : La Sombra Del Viento (Autores Espanoles E Iberoamericanos) (Spanish Edition) [Carlos Ruiz Zafon] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. La Sombra Del Viento Autores Espanoles E Iberoamericanos Spanish Edition Carlos Ruiz Zafon 9780974872407 Books Reviews
I really cannot emphasize enough how wonderful this book is. If you speak Spanish, by all means, get the version in Spanish. I haven't read the English translation, and while I'm sure it's wonderful, I'm glad I waited until my Spanish was at a level to where I was able to read the original. One of my professors during my semester abroad in Spain recommended this book highly to me years ago and when I finally sent the sample chapter to my a few months ago, I was hooked from the first line. (I still remember that morning in which my father took me for the first time to visit the Cemetery of Forgotten Books)
The wonderful thing about La sombra del viento is that not only does the plot keep you on the edge of your seat, and not only do the characters come alive, and not only is it beautifully written, but there are some amazing lines in the book that are just so insightful, and when I finished, as the main character says of the titular book in the first few pages of the novel, "No quería perder el hechizo de la historia ni todavía decir adiós a sus personajes." (I didn't want to lose the enchantment of the story, or say goodbye to its characters yet.)
This is easily the best book I've ever read in Spanish, and probably one of the top five best books I've ever read period. I can't wait to read the sequel.
Quede enamorada.
If you enjoy highly descriptive writing and an eerie fixation on all sorts of textures (scents, surfaces, emotions...), you will absolutely love this book. Full of intrigue and surprising plot twists...it absorbs you, captivates you, and then releases you into the world a changed person. Im in love.
The Moriarty character (played by Andrew Scott) in the BBC's latest Sherlock series was my image for this novel's completely off-the-rails policeman Fumero. Total nut job! In the beginning, the tale shaped up for me like a Peter Straub encounter with the supernatural. Excellent misdirection! Female characters were limp, passive disappointments until we met Penelope's amah and read Nuría's long, expository letter. Strong female characters there. Fermín's conversations had me running to the dictionary to get educated about many Spanish colloquialisms. Very funny at times.
I am, maybe, an "advanced intermediate" reader of Spanish; native language = English. This was an enjoyable read for me and I look forward to the next title in this series.
