Many times I felt myself getting pulled into the struggles and frustrations of the family as they tried to make the best possible life for their sweet Annie. By the end of the book I felt that I knew Annie. She was a real person to me . This book was a tribute to her from her loving sister who shared deep and personal moments with her readers in order to allow us to be a part of Annie's life and world.

What a wonderful book to share with anyone who has struggled with the same situation and for anyone who wants to educate themselves on what life with a disabled person may be like. Christine Smith Grote writes beautifully and her love and devotion to her sweet sister, Annie, shines through on every page. Definitely a book to pass along to others so that they can share in the life of a wonderful woman .

This is an excellent book! I read it in one sitting (because I couldn't put it down) and then reread it, because there were parts I really wanted to completely take in. I highly recommend this to anyone who has suffered loss in their family. The dedication to one another is very apparent in the telling of this story of a family and the special child that they all devoted themselves to.
I was drawn to read this book because I have a 14 year old daughter with severe Cerebral Palsy. When Jessica was a baby, we took her everywhere with us, as we would with both of our boys. She was part of our family and would do everything with our family. I remember looking around a restaurant one time when we were out for breakfast as a family. All the children in the restaurant looked "normal" or at least they all looked physically abled. I thought, "wow, we are the only family in the whole world that have a daughter who is not 'normal'". It was so hard to deal with the stares as people tried to "figure out" Jessica. Even as Jessica got older and a little harder to get around she went every where with us, camping, fishing biking, to church, everywhere. Since she was in a wheelchair, people at least knew that there was something wrong with her. I learned shortly after the restaurant revelation that we were not the only family in the world with a girl with special needs, we were they only ones in the area that day that brought their child with special needs to the restaurant or out anywhere, on every day. It was always difficult to bring Jessica everywhere with us, both physically and emotionally, but we would have never even thought to do any different. We soon learned that Jessica's "purpose" in this world, or how we were going to handle Jessica's special needs. Jessica was with us to teach the world about children with special needs. We taught children and parents alike that Jessica is a very special girl with feelings, who wants to be included just like any other child. That she was not as "physically" abled as other children, but everything she could do was a miracle!
I related so many ways to Christine Grote and "Dancing In Heaven". Christine wrote in her book that Annie was always generous with her smiles. When Jessica was a baby, I prayed to God for her to smile. She didn't smile or really cry when she was a baby, but at 8 months old she gave us her first smile and now she is very generous with her smiles (and sometimes her tears). Jessica's smiles now are like a welcoming hug to friends and strangers who come up to her and say hi.
Annie's parents had tireless care and love for Annie. Annie's sisters were proud of their beautiful sister. Since Carol shared all details of Annie's life and at the end, illness, made me feel like part of a special club. A special club that has special people in their life like Annie and Jessica. I no longer feel like I am the only one that has a child like Jessica. I am also to happy to know that there is another family like ours, so proud of every thing that their special child can do, a family that helped Annie go everywhere and experience as much as she could of the beautiful world around us. A family that shared their child with the rest of the world, so others could understand the joys of being around such a special child. A special girl that struggled and worked so hard to do everything she did here on earth who now is blessed to be Dancing in Heaven (and now who is able to dance in heaven with her parents).
I consider myself very blessed in that my family is healthy. My children (currently six and three) are, as far as I know, the picture of good health. Inside the walls of my home, I can live in an isolated world free from disability and grief.

There are too many unanswered questions. I thought this story was interesting but left me wanting to understand more. Did Annie understand questions, I know she could not talk. Did she ever try and talk? The story sounds like Annie was the only child that the parents adored. There was no mention of the other siblings or grandchildren being important or spending family time. Did the other siblings ever feel left out? The book had too much repetition , left a lot out about the whole family dynamic. I felt like the author was not telling her true feelings, Even though she loved her sister.
