I liked how Gwen’s gift works, and how she was able to save a friend from bad things because of it. It was also neat that her mother and grandmother also had gifts, and that they were different gifts. I imagined all these things she could do with it, plot lines that could be had, etc.

I wasn’t as fond of the fact that the foreshadowing was anything but subtle. No building up to it, no mystery, just bam! One sentence, and I immediately stopped reading to stare at it and think to myself: “Really? I hate it when books use that line.” Mostly because it’s always used when something terrible is about to happen to a character. And no, I’m not telling you what it is. You’ll know it when you read it.

It also seemed like black hair was a favorite. At least 3 people at Mythos Academy were described as having it. And since Gwen doesn’t go there til the end of the book, and is only being shown around without meeting or attending classes yet, that’s a lot of people to have with the same hair color when only a handful are described at all. That may just be me though. I like variety so it’s easier to picture them in my head.

There were many uses of the same word over and over. Case in point:

“I screamed and screamed and screamed.”

And that seemed to be a thing, using the same word a few times in the same sentence like that. There were also scenes that reminded me of Harry Potter. I like Harry Potter a lot, and admittedly there are enough fantasy books around about magic schools now that it’s hard to be completely original and not do something people have seen before. But I still had the “I’ve read that scene….” feeling for some of the things that happen in this book.

I’m not sure if I’ll read book 1 in this series or not. I’ll have to check the reviews and see if it gets better. If there’s more of the same stuff that bugged me in this prequel, I’ll most likely give it a pass.

First Frost Mythos Academy eBook Jennifer Estep Reviews

Gwen Frost is a Gypsy with the gift of psychometry. She sees images of other people's memories when she touches their possessions. Instead of having regular employment somewhere, she charges her fellow students for finding their lost items, and makes a decent amount of money doing it.

She knows her friend Paige is hiding something that troubles her, but she won't speak of it. Too late, Gwen realizes how monumental it is when she touches something that belongs to her. She starts screaming and cannot stop even when she passes out. Tragedy follows when Gwen's mother, a detective, takes care of the situation for Paige.

Amidst Gwen's grief and confusion, she is thrust into the world of Mythos Academy. There the entire student body consists of paranormals, many with magical abilities. This story ends with Gwen's accepting that this place is where she belongs.

This is not really a story, but an introduction to how Gwen came to be at the Mythos Academy. I gave the author three stars for her unique vision of the paranormal world from the view of a young teenager, but not for the way the story was written. Grammatical errors occurred on a frequent basis. Tenses were not the same in some paragraphs, and some words were mistaken for others. The dialogue seemed choreographed. The characters were not fully fleshed out, and many descriptions were lacking. I found it extremely difficult to like the main character. She is rather selfish to an extent, and not very mature (she's a teenager, so I will forgive her for that).

A Harlequin Teen novel, I think this one will be well appreciated by readers who aren't old enough to have teenagers of their own. (Just my personal opinion.) I will not be reading any further offerings in the Mythos series.
First Frost is the prequel short story to the Mythos academy series which was released nearly a month ago to get the fans a taste of what's to come in the Mythos Academy series. I had read the first book Touch of Frost and enjoyed it so I was very much interested in this prequel story as the events occurring in it are referred to by Gwen.

First Frost occurs a few weeks before those of Kiss of Frost. It opens with Gwen who is a normal teenager with a secret power, the power being that she has the gift of Pyschometry which gives her the ability to draw emotion or images from the items possessed by people. This very ability helps her to gain some extra money by helping find lost objects for her class mates. However an event occurs due to Gwen's curiosity which backfires psychologically on Gwen and leads to certain events which form the basis of the this short story. They also lead to her gaining admission to the Mythos academy wherein kids from the age of sixteen to twenty one are trained in various arts (magical, martial, etc.) to become defendants of humanity against the Reapers of Chaos who are trying to free their master Loki.

This short story works as a good setup for the entire series as it explains a crucial part in the background of the main series character, however it is just that a prequel story which if read on its own, will just give the reader a small look in to the life of Gwen Frost and the world she inhabits. It will be particularly relishing to read it in tandem with Touch of Frost (1st book) as that way the events seem to progress naturally and makes it that much more fun to read. The events taking place in the short story are also referenced in the first book and therefore aren't required reading but if you do so it gives you that extra bit about the background.

CONCLUSION A decent short story which helps the reader to gain a bit of background about a new YA series which promises a lot of fun, action, humor in the inimitable style of Jennifer Estep.
